HANDS
IN SERVICE (HIS), established in 1981, is a fellowship of friends in Christ
in Soroti, Uganda who have joined together to demonstrate the reconciling
love of Jesus Christ among people of different denominations, cultures, and
backgrounds, as they share the hope of the Kingdom of God amid a society
wrecked by decades of civil war, AIDS, violence, and poverty.
As an indigenously managed Christian ministry, HIS has made a commitment
to be an agent of reconciliation, helping enemies become friends……peacemakers.
HIS strives to be an agent of change, perceiving our daily activities
and lifestyles to be opportunities to change society to be more like the
Kingdom of God. HIS is committed to foster unity among the body of Christ,
by accepting and encouraging all Christians as brothers and sisters to work
together across denominational, ethnic, and socio economic boundaries to
the glory of God. HIS strives to be stewards of God’s truth in
Jesus Christ and his message of salvation offered to all mankind. And HIS
is committed to being stewards of the resources entrusted to our care so
that his Kingdom is built up on the earth. Under girding the ministry of
Hands In Service is an operational commitment to demonstrate self sustainability
as a way of life. “Let us work with our hands that we might have
something to share with others” Ephesians 4:28.
This mission is lived out daily in a region of Northeastern Uganda that
encompasses nearly 2 million people from the Teso and Kamum tribal groups.
HIS is headquartered in Soroti which serves as the main trading center for
the region. Through the years HIS has been involved in many innovative community
development and ministry initiatives as a response to the changing societal
challenges and problems that arise in this part of the world. Currently,
HIS is operating two sustainable initiatives:
JUBILEE WORKSHOP: is a full service custom metal fabrication workshop
employing about 10 people and a number of apprentices in training. The
workshop produces gates, doors, windows, water tanks, and a host of custom
and
repair work.
HIS PROPERTY MANAGEMENT: HIS manages and maintains two large
buildings in Soroti that comprise industrial, commercial and office space
for rent.
HIS is currently active in directly operating the following ministry outreaches:
HIS VIDEO OUTREACH: a team of HIS employees and volunteers regularly
minister to the region using mobile film and video equipment. They go into
schools, prisons, churches and other public events using the Jesus Film
in the ITESO language and other evangelistic and community development
video resources. It is common for the HIS team to do multiple day outreach
workshops in many of the remote, outlying areas in the region.
HIS CHILDRENS MINISTRY: Each weekday afternoon, HIS hosts an outreach
for children in the HIS ministry center. Nearly a hundred children show
up each day off of the street to do special activities and projects oriented
to education, outreach and discipleship.
HIS VOCATIONAL TRAINING SCHOOL: This ministry for young men and
women is designed to foster Christian discipleship and vocational training
in a year long training program. Graduates often move into the HIS apprenticeship
program at the Jubilee Workshop.
HIS MINISTRY TO REFUGEES: Due to the conditions in the region
over the past 23 years, HIS continues to minister to the needs of displaced
people from time to time as the situation warrants. Though the HIS mission
leans toward outreach and development, ministering to those in crisis is
a necessity in the midst of war and drought. HIS is attentive to helping
mobilize and facilitate other relief organizations that can help in this
isolated region
HIS also supports and facilitates other effective ministries in the region,
particularly in the area of peacemaking and biblical reconciliation, literacy,
micro enterprise, youth outreach, women’s cooperative initiatives,
sustainable agriculture development and rural village medical outreach among
others.
By God’s grace, HIS continues to be a beacon of light and encouragement
not only to Northeastern Uganda, but to North American Christians who capture
a vision for what it truly means to serve each other, cross-culturally, as “friends
in Christ” and co laborers in His Kingdom here on earth.
